چکیده

Exact diagonalization is a powerful numerical technique to analyze static and dynamical quantities in quantum many-body lattice models. It provides unbiased information concerning quantum numbers, energies and wave-functions of the lowenergy eigenstates for almost any kind of microscopic model. The information about energies and quantum numbers is particularly useful to detect possible spontaneous symmetry breaking at T = 0. We review some of the advances in the field of frustrated quantum magnets which have been possible thanks to detailed symmetry analysis of exact diagonalizations spectra. New results concerning the kagome and star lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets are presented. PACS numbers: 75.10.Jm, 75.40.Mg, 75.50.Ee Submitted to: J. Phys.: Condens. Matter

Quantum Effects and Broken Symmetries in Frustrated Antiferromagnets

We investigate the interplay between frustration and zero-point quantum fluctuations in the ground state of the triangular and J1−J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets, using finitesize spin-wave theory, exact diagonalization, and quantum Monte Carlo methods. In the triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet, by performing a systematic size-scaling analysis, we have obtained strong evidences for a gapless ...

Thin spectrum states in bulk superconductors and superconducting grains

We show how a local pairing model for superconductivity can be used to describe the symmetry breaking mechanism in exact analogy to the case of quantum crystal and antiferromagnets. We find that there are low energy states associated with the symmetry breaking process which are not influenced by the Anderson-Higgs mechanism. The presence of these ’thin spectrum’ states in qubits based on superc...

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in quantum mechanics

We present a mathematically simple procedure to explain spontaneous symmetry breaking in quantum systems. The procedure is applicable to a wide range of models and can be easily used to explain the existence of a symmetry broken state in crystals, antiferromagnets, and even superconductors. It has the advantage that it automatically brings to the fore the main players in spontaneous symmetry br...

Topological Many-Body States in Quantum Antiferromagnets via Fuzzy Supergeometry

Recent vigorous investigations of topological order have not only discovered new topological states of matter but also shed new light to “already known” topological states. One established example with topological order is the valence bond solid (VBS) states in quantum antiferromagnets. The VBS states are disordered spin liquids with no spontaneous symmetry breaking but most typically manifest ...

Quantum phase transitions of antiferromagnets and the cuprate superconductors

I begin with a proposed global phase diagram of the cuprate superconductors as a function of carrier concentration, magnetic field, and temperature, and highlight its connection to numerous recent experiments. The phase diagram is then used as a point of departure for a pedagogical review of various quantum phases and phase transitions of insulators, superconductors, and metals. The bond operat...
